"You can prepare as much clothes, toiletries, and other "necessities" as possible but nothing will be as useful as preparing an open mind, adaptability, patience and respect." ~Mike Amos You really don't know what you have until you realize you don't have it and in other cases, when you realize others don't have it either. As cliché as that sounds, it stands true. In my ten day visit to China, I’ve seen and experienced a lot yet realized there is much more. It wasn’t much that I learned about the culture but what I learned from it. Traveling with others from different cultures allowed me to see differences between different types of people. As the title implies, I felt as if I was drowning in a sea of similar faces. It was easy for me to be able to sit in the background and observe the surroundings and interactions because I was mostly mistaken as a Chinese person. With that being so, I was able to see how Chinese interact with each other as they interacted with me… which wasn’t a lot. Though I can tell you that I must have confused many Chinese people when I opened my mouth and they discovered that I was not Chinese. It was a great experience and I was very glad that I took the opportunity. You can learn a lot when you are out and about. I have learned a lot about people and places and more so of the people I’ve been traveling with. Everyone was different yet alike. If you ever get an opportunity to travel, go for it. You’ll meet many people, mane new friends and gain valuable life experience. Just remember, you can prepare as much clothes, toiletries, and other "necessities" as possible but nothing will be as useful as preparing an open mind, adaptability, patience and respect. |
